They all function pretty similarly on the same principals. Most of us just run these barrels and nothing else. You can add a waterfall skimmer if you like as well.

Well this will be my very first time to build a filter like this. Can you provide a link to the 55 gallon drum guide that you would follow? I am a little nervous to just pick one out of the hat. But you seem to really know what you are talking about so I feel like it would be safe to just take your word for it.
