You can absolutely use that skimmer as an inlet of water for the pump, yes. The only think you need to recognize is that it has a very tiny leaf basket, so you will need to clear it often. It is also high on pond water line level, so you will need to check your water level daily to make sure it doesn't drop below the skimmer mouth, otherwise your pump will run dry.

excellent. i think i may skip the building of the DIY skimmer / prefilter so i can get this thing up and running faster. later on i could incorporate a proper skimmer system.

i feel comfortable with the pump, filter and plumbing but the home-made skimmer was causing much anxiety.

thanks again.

oh, where's a good place to get 2" bulkhead fittings, ball valves and reducers? i had a cart loaded up here. but held off on the purchase when my pump specs changed.

example.
2: 2" Ball Valve, Jandy Brand, slip socket $16.00 $32.00
3: 2" Bulkhead, f th x f th C218 $10.90 $32.70
1: 1 1/2"Swing Check Valve, clear V286C $21.50 $21.50
1: 1 1/2" Ball Valve, Jandy Brand, slip socket J243 $14.00 $14.00
6:1 1/2" Flexible PVC pipe/ft. C283 $1.50 $9.00
2: 1 1/2"x 2" Bell reducer 40765 $2.00 $4.00

do these seems like pretty standard prices? seemed fair when i compartive shopped around... guess you win on some parts and lose on others...looking at your build i'm thinking i need to add a few more valves throughout the system. i assume you wanna be able to isolate any single component of the system to perform repairs or replacements.

thanks again.

I usually go to the local plumbing supply for these items. I don't like buying ball valves at HD/Lowes as the quality is not up to par in comparison to the ones from a plumbing supply shop.

You will not find bulkheads in HD/Lowes, those have to come from a pond shop or plumbing supply (cheaper at the latter). But, you could also use 2" grey male and female conduit fittings from the electrical dept to create a very close fitting item that is much like a bulkhead and cheaper. You can see these in my stock tank build in the DIY section.

You will not find a clear swing check valve in HD/Lowes, you have to go to a plumbing supply for that.

Prices look about right, but do check your local plumbing supply first before paying shipping. Some of these items are heavy.

after a short hiatus.. i'm back. had a delay on my pump. i was supposed to get a SEQUENCE 1000 series 5400 23' head. after 4 weeks of delays, today on my door step was a SEQUENCE 4000 SERIES 6800SEQ22.

yesterday i ordered the textured strapping, sniped it off ebay for $1.25. 9000 feet 1/2 thick.

i have my 100 gal rubbermaid stock tank, some krew kut filter media and bird netting. i plan on buying the green matala for $117 for 39x48 this week or next. i'll put the krew kut filter media i have on top of that.

as far as piping goes, i've got:

Quantity Name Each Total
4 2" Bulkhead, f th x f th C218 $12.95 $51.80
4 2" Ball Valve, Jandy Brand, slip socket $18.00 $72.00
1 2" Clear Swing True Union Check Valve $39.50 $39.50
$171.30 free shipping

sitting in my shopping cart at aquaart.

i have the all the 2" swirly pipes and i'm planning on getting a 5ft' and 12' piece of 2" pvc from lowes.

i'm going to try and rig up the skimmer / prefilter before the pump. so i'll use a 2" bulkhead out the skimmer box to run 2" pipe to the pump. (could i run flex pipe out of the skimmer to the pump?)

(skimmer / prefilter -->2" bulkhead --> 2" pipe ---> soft 45 ---> 2"pipe-->2" ball valve--->2" pipe --> sequence inlet --> 2" pipe sequence outlet --> 2" clear true union check valve-->2" pipe -->2" soft 45--> 2" bulkhead ---> 100 gal stock tank --> 2" swirly pipe >upflow filtration to waterfall pond re-entry.)

...and a 2' bulkhead / 2' ball valve for the waste drain on the stock tank.

does this sound correct? i feel like i'm missing some pipes / fittings...

this pond has been stagnant for at least 10 mos. i guess it'd be smart to drain it all out, scrub it clean and refill it, right? i'll have to find a temporary home for the 4 koi that have survived .

a little closer than before, but still at least a week away.

yes, drain and give it a quick scrub. There is no sense using staid water to begin.

Did you try checking with a local plumbing supply on your your parts? They may have to order the bulkheads and clear checkvalves, etc, but you might get a better price. You might still be able to save a few pennies.
