This is my second year with the pond. Last year was all microscopic algae all year long. The bog finally started competing in the fall and the water cleared up. Wow, found lots of babies. Anyway, it stayed clear all winter. As the warm weather arrived, string algae really took over. Water is still clear but it is a chore to clean out the skimmer and grab handfuls of the stuff from everywhere. In the skimmer basket it forms into a big ball due to the flow. The bog plants from last year have all started shoots and the rushes have come back nice. I added six new plants to the bog this year including arrowheads and spider lilies. Now I just need to be patient and hope the shubies do not produce to many youngsters this year.

I have always found with the right balance of plants in the pond be it in a bog or just planted in the pond and around the rock work at the edge of the pond, will keep green water from happening. In all the versions of ponds I’ve kept over the years, about 3-4 ponds, I’ve never had an algae problem. The only thing similar in each pond is the use of plants to maintain water quality, and leaving the pump and waterfalls running year round.
