I started my pond about 3 years ago. Got fed up with chasing green water this past spring, and just let it go. Installed a bog, and haven't done anything since. haven't even tested the water. until today. Water cleared up within a week of me saying ta heck with it, and giving up.
Plants are thriving, fish seem to be just fine, and frogs, salamanders, snails, all seem to be doing well too. Only thing I do now is empty the skimmer basket, and add water, lost due to evaporation. That's it. Ponding is only as much work as you make it.
I have no UV, no filtration other than the bog, it's doing well.

yes, but please ignore the water!!
Nice pond! I see all kinds of plants around, but very few feeding on the pond water it's self. I also see a spot just perfect for a bog, and waterfall. That will clear up your pond pretty quickly.

Love it, that is all I have. When I first told pond people I was using only a bog to filter, the common thought was it is not going to work.
The best pond I have ever built.

We heard the same thing, over and over and over. "You'll never get rid of the green water" (never had green water) "Your pond will stink" (nope - smells great!) "You can't have fish in a pond without a (you name the type) filter" (well we do!).

Are we bog fanatics @Lisak1 ? The only time I have cloudy water is the first day after I turn it on after winter. Or when I walk in the bog and yank plants, both times it clears up in a day or so.

I'm pretty sure that's what you'd call us! I feel very lucky that we built our pond right around the time that the pros were starting to build bog filtration on their ponds. We visited a few ponds on pond walks and heard the term "bog" or "bog filter". It kind of stuck in the back of my head, but we didn't really register what they were talking about - and none of them were STRICTLY bog filtered. These were all in addition to bio falls - like I said, it was the early days of constructed wetlands here in the midwest. People were still either cautiously adding them to their builds or retrofitting ponds to include them.

But when we were at the point of purchasing our equipment and supplies, the guy said "you should consider a bog filter. We're recommending them on all our ponds now". He went on to explain how they work and how to build it - that moment changed our pond plans and opened our eyes to an even EASIER way to keep a pond. For this lazy gardener/ponder, EASIER is always the key! My three key selling points for anything I do are NATURAL, EASY, and CHEAP. Haha!
