Hi
I’ve had a garden pond in England for some 11 years now
But after recently buying new fish to the pond, I’ve suddenly noticed one of my 4 golden tench has red sores on one side and occasionally goes into a mad fit swimming around the pond.
They are around a foot in length and something I’ve not seen before with my fish.
Worried I’ve been given fish with infections and past it on.
Any recommendations would be appreciated

Welcome Norman! Those are some big fish. Red sores only on one side could be anything from scales damaged by a net or some sort of disease. Were the red sores present when you first brought the fish home? Is it possible to post a picture of the ailing fish? How large is your pond and how many fish (total) do you have in the pond? What type of filtration do you have? Glad to have you as a member of this forum!

Thank you, no pic yet, I’m actually trying to catch her ias I type.
No netting but there are a couple of large rocks where she may of brushed against
These fish have been healthy since I got them 11 years ago
The fish I stocked were 3-4 inches in size (Roach & Rudd where I have 17 of them
Also I shubukin 2 goldfish and 1 large Rudd along with the 4 golden tench.
Pond is 8-9 feet long and 6 feet wide, nearly 4 feet at its deepest
I use the Oase 6000 filter and a very good powerful pump.
11 years I’ve had the pond.
Had a few goldfish over the years but gradually lost them due to swim bladder issues, other than that it’s been good to me.
The other 3 golden tench don’t seem to have anything wrong.

when I catch the tench I’ll post it.

just managed to catch her.

I would isolate the fish in a large hospital tank. Here is a link that might be useful:
Over the years, I have been successful using a mild dose of aquarium salt (in the isolation tank) to treat all sorts of ailments. But the thing is, you often can't mix salt treatment with prepared remedy solutions obtained from a pet shop. I think your pond is overstocked based upon your pond size which seems to be about 1600 gallons. Those foot-long fish need lots of water volume and massive filtration.

Thank you for that.
Best I have is a 40 litre bucket.
I’ve mixed a some blagdon first aid treatment and applied it to the area and have some pond salt arriving tomorrow to aid the immune system.
I’ll let you know how things go
She seems chilled out since the application, but I rather didn’t want to have to remove her each time and stress her out.

Oh yeah, 40 liters (10 gallons) is way too small. One thing I should share is my aversion to using salt in ponds. I never use salt and don't recommend it for general pond use. It would be better to treat the fish in a hospital tank but if that is not possible another method is to use a dip several times per day. There might be some other members who can jump in and share their treatment ideas. My biggest concern is your bioload and water quality. I really think that might be the source of the problem. Do you have water testing capability? By the way, I think it is commendable that you care so much for your fish!

None of the other fish are showing signs just this one fish, the sore isn’t as red but has spread along the flank slightly
I’ve been applying blagdon first aid to her but will now do it daily.
Water quality is fine, no nitrogen and salt arriving today hopefully

Hi guys
Update on my Golden Tench
After treatment of 5 days using Blagdon anti fungus and bacteria coupled with Blagdon pond salt, there has been a significant improvement to her, the redness eased but fungus had moved along her flank but that is hardly noticeable now
I’ve not had the courage to remove her again for a closer look as I don’t want to stress her.

but here’s a pic of the pond anyway
Water testing done, all ok apart from the Nitrate, will be doing a water change in a few days to bring the levels down as the pond salt is still improving the immune system of the fish after treatment.
