These were my Japanese imports when I got them in June. They are bigger now and their color is more defined. I think it was a bit muted because they were kept indoors at the koi store.

On the whole "mutt" front...

My koi are all imported. Three from Japan, one from Israel.

The Japanese koi are from King Ed Pets in Vancouver. A very reputable fish store, and the owners travel to asia and pick out their large goldfish and their koi (along with various other fish) and bring them back for sale. I have a couple very nice orandas and a beautiful ranchu from there.

However, my koi from there don't seem to fit any of the proper pattern descriptions. Well, my red and white one does, but he's not viewed as ideal, because he's got some red in his tail, and the red spot on his head is on his nose.

My Israeli koi is a kin kabuto.

Anyway, I figured my Japanese koi were "mutts", as in somewhat generic and undesireable (I think they're beautiful). Does the fact that they were imported and that they're still small mean they're likely to develop colour into one of the recognized varieties? Or did King Ed just import a bunch of mediocre koi? If the latter, wouldn't it be cheaper for them to just buy wholesale domestically?

So confused...

leanne....nice looking fish!! ... two people move here from Japan marry and have kids. the fact that they were born here doesnt make their gene pool any less japanese.but the kids are born americans.. impoted doesnt necessarily mean quality.and baeuty is in the eye of the beholder...that said.. who cares if your not putting them in shows?

koiguy said it right. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and King Ed buys what his eye tells him is attractive, but that does not mean others will agree.

Koi are like wine. Lots of different opinions on body, color, taste, etc. Same bottle of wine may illicit dozens of different viewpoints. Koi are no different. If you love 'em that's all that matters.

Here a a recent pic of him. You can see his color has come out a lot more. Some parts of him look silver.
I may show him when he gets a bit bigger.

gorgeous fish!

It's funny, I posted my Israeli koi was a kin kabuto, and I just looked at him, and he's changing colour. He was solid deep yellow with a strong black net colour over his body, black markings on his head (looked like eye liner), and white fins. Now, he's turning into white with yellow markings, still has the net pattern, the markings on his head are going away. He's also starting to show some gin rin scales...
