FISH SURVIVES BEING FROZEN IN ICE

The fish went down with the others, and I have not seen any dead fish so I presume he is doing ok. We now have snow on the ice so I can no longer see.

When I took the pictures of the fish in the ice it was pretty frozen, that was on the Tuesday at 4pm. I was able to put a foot on the ice, it did crack and some water did ooze out though, but at the time it looked frozen in the ice. Maybe the bottom side was still a bit slushy on him, but I don’t know. Tuesday night and all day Wednesday it was below freezing, so the ice would have only gotten harder. Sometime on the Wednesday night the temperature went above 0 as when I left fork at 6:15am it was already about 4C. That day it went up to about 15C. I would say he was frozen in the ice for a little over 2 days of the 3+ day ordeal.

It’s a good thing fish don’t talk... I could only imagine what he would say after the ordeal when all I did the first day was lean over and take pictures! lol

He probabbly cried all night for help till owner came and saved his sorry fins!!

I don't have a first-hand account of this, but someone I knew years ago had a small pond in her yard (maybe a couple hundred gallons, with no filtration). Her son had dug it out and they knew nothing about actual maintenance. She told me that they would put goldfish in the pond during the Summer, and in the Winter the pond would freeze up completely solid. They typically had about half of the fish survive, then they would add more the next year. I've heard of other people having similar experiences with your common feeder-quality goldfish, so I guess it could be true?
