Hello,

In need of help quite badly.

Have water quality issues which I’m trying to keep on top of.

Just now I noticed a white patch on some of my larger fish:

I’m also thinking that I have too many fish in the pond. The goldfish keep multiplying which isn’t helping 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Any ideas on that white patch? I know it’s not easy to see from the pic 🤦‍♂️

Welcome to the forum!

What size is your pond? How many fish? Can you get some better pictures?

Hi addy,

Thanks for your help. I’ve actually asked for help on another forum pond-life https://www.pond-life.me.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=152&t=20608&start=20 - but just need any kind of help I can get right now. Apologies - it feels a bit sneaky asking in two places but I hope people here may be able to help.

- Pond is 10,000 litres
- 20 ish koi / ghost koi a few bigger 30cm most are small
- allot of goldfish - they seem to be endlessly multiplying 🤦‍♂️

Here is a video which should help to get an idea about the pond:

Filter is not really good enough I think - it’s a large fish food container with lots of holes drilled in the bottom - k3 media bottom half and three layers of foam filter on top

Here:

A pond specialist is quoting for a system overhaul including a fit for purpose filter system - it’ll likely be a month or two or longer however.

I don’t think some of the fish will last that long.

I have a uv steriliser in place and a ‘medium pond’ blower in addition to the waterfalls for aeration.

I’ll try and get some better pictures or the sores on the fish.

I think it’s probably stemming from water quality issues (test photos attached.

I also think (these are my theories but really I don’t know what I’m doing - just trying to figure it out to help these fish) - I probably have too many fish in the pond.

I recently put a net over it to protect from herons - right now I’m sitting here watching ALLOT of goldfish and baby goldfish swimming around happily while the koi are all subdued and probably a bit sick.

I wonder if the goldfish are thriving at the expense of the koi 🤦‍♂️

I’ve ordered:

- more plants ( if I fill the middle pond with plants I think that should help
- more bio media and another air blower*

I’m thinking to fill that top pond with bio media and put the blower to the bottom of the pond - try and really boost my bio filtration.

Other than that - a 10% water change today with de-chlorinater and worrying allot.

Another fish has something similar although right now it looked like a similar size areas of skin is flapping off.

It seems like a silly question

They wouldn’t scratch themselves on these bricks? They’re recently added

How many gallons is the pond?

Your filtration is not keeping up with the fish population so you definitely need to increase that.

Sores like those are usually a result of poor water quality and your nitrite is at a very toxic level.

I would add prime to bind that nitrite so your fish can be protected while you are sorting out the water. It wouldn't hurt to do a larger water change.

The sores can be treated with triple antibiotic ointment and or iodine.

Too many fish will cause issues. How big is your pond?
Can you dig a bigger pond if yours is too small or maybe give some fish away?

He said 10000 liters. = 2641 about, gallons.

Way to small for the # of fish, especially koi. Unless you have horrendous amount of filtration. Even then too small.

Pretty pond!

Ease up on feeding , 20 percent water changes every week. Not sure why on thay side of the pond that raised ponds rule. VACUUM anything on the bottom.
