I cut my slices 1" to 1 1/2" slices. I like to watch them go beneath and suck a big hole in it.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I can't wait to see how they react to all of these new "treats". I love to watch them eat the orange slices -- they play with it, bumping it for a few seconds then attack! Maybe the watermelon will be easy for me to hold to get them to start hand-feeding more often. They are still a little shy about that. Any tricks to get them more comfortable with hand-feeding?

MANDA FU koi food is a good training aid to get them to eat out of your hand.

when you feed stick around, let them know its you feeding them, when they get comfortable with you being there feed them and keep your hand in the water... they will get accustomed to it, and if you feed less often hunger will over ride fear and voila... tetra pond makes a orange flavored hand feeding treat...looks like pork rines or cheese puffs, my fish love em'

My koi love oranges and watermelon. An occasional earthworm is also a great treat.
Question : would you recommend putting leftover food in a sealed bag in the fridge for several months?

I always put my hand near the water when I feed and stay at least 5 minutes or more. They come to me, but get spooked as soon as they realize I'm still there.
I tried the watermelon this weekend. They were interested, but didn't eat it at first- they just bumped at it and left it alone for a while. I didn't give them any other food at the time, so in about 5-10 minutes they got more and more curious and soon devoured it! I'll try it again in a few days. It's fun watching them eat oranges, too.
They didn't like the lettuce, though.
