How many gallons is your whole system Addy? Any idea? I do honestly think we may need more fish in our pond to keep our marginal plants happy. I keep hoping every year they will perk up, but in the end I've had to fertilize them to get them green and growing. One good shot and they are happy.

My best guess is 12-14 thousand, if you add up the small preform ponds, stream ponds, deck ponds, big pond and two stock tank ponds. The big pond is 26 feet x 15-20 feet by 5 deep with a walk out shallow end. Stream ponds from 8x8 down to 3x2, have not bothered to do any serious measuring. I don't treat the pond with any salt or medications where you need to know actual gallons.

I still have a lot of water room left for more fish. The big pond increased in fish load a lot the first summer, very few fish, lots of water = eggs making it, now the fish munch as soon as the eggs are dropped, so less make it.

the rock/gravel in a bog is just like any other bio filter. the cleaner you keep it, the more efficient it will be. like any filter "biocolony" it doesnt know or care if the ammonias, and nitrates it feeds on are from inside it or pumped in. if you filter mechanically and and dont remove the wastes from the water column, it will have just as much food source as if the wastes were trapped inside the bog. removing the wastes, (cleaning filter) doesnt make the bog any less efficient , just less neccessary. ....just my 2cents
