I use UV only when needed for algae. That is very rare these days since my pond is mature and algae is not much of an issue. It's turned off all winter and may be used for a few weeks in spring, if necessary. But it usually stays off all year.

Nope. It serves only one purpose and even that - to me - is sketchy. When you kill algae in a pond - in any way at at all - you're left with dead algae in the pond. Algae feeds on dead algae. The better way to deal with algae is to get to the source of the issue and correct it.

I have never used a UV and I don't have an algae issue. Pond been running for 20+ years. Carpet algae on the sides is the good stuff to keep, never scrape that away!
