Stupid question but is a filter media box essentially set up the same as a bog? Ie, water piped in from the bottom with filter media in differing densities that flows back into the pond once it percolates up to the top?

Also the rubbermaid totes that I see used for filter boxes, what type are they and do you drill your own hole in them?

Cincy Ohio or there abouts!
Only stupid question is one not asked.
It all depends, some commercial built boxes have water coming in from the bottom, others from the top. Just depends on how manufacturer builds it. Some have water going though media vertical, other pump it sideways through media then out.

I'm just exploring the building a filter media tub versus a bog. I like the ability to bottom drain as a clean out since I can't really do that with my bog. Long term I'm wondering if this isn't a better choice for easy maintenance.

I put my pump inside a milk create with filter pads, pot scrubbers , and quilt batting then my waterfall has more filter media plus lava rocks. Seems to keep my pond really clear and never have a problem with water levels. I was thinking about making a air tight tub with filter media also. But I like having the bulk at my pump. I had sucked up a few koi and goldfish a few years back due to trying to mostly filter past the pump. I was sooooooo upset.

From what I understand a bog takes care of itself, only grooming of the topside is your job. Seems pretty low maint. to me.

It is now, but I have to assume that eventually, like anything, it will accumulate dirt and sand and crud that will require it to be cleaned. That's when things will get dicey for me since in order to clean it, I'd have to clean it out completely. No bottom drain or anything like that. Whereas with the a media tub I would think, it is set up to be easily cleaned out. I am sure you could do a bog in a tub with a bottom drain built into it, I'm also looking at that.

How about a vegetative filter? Same idea as a 'bog', but no gravel. Just a shallow pond with water hyacinth/lettuce floating in it, and a spillway near the top. Pull out the surplus plants when necessary, and empty and drain in the fall. Repeat yearly!

I'm a little leery of a shallow anything given how hot we get down here. I think it would prove a breeding ground for algae. I do have the WH and lettuce in big pond.

I put my water in the top and have a pipe on the tank adapter .My hose goes in a basket ontop of the filter tank and it holds quilt batting a furnace filter .The tank holds bags of lava rock
