@Patching I think your best bet would be look for firms that use that sort of material.
I recall a member that used those industrial scouring pads for floor polishers , using them instead of Jap matting, they did work very well apparently and are quite cheap heres a UK website to show you what I mean:-

Also find a company that makes quilt batting and buy in bulk it works out very cheap and is what we do here in the UK however we use Jap matting [it came with the filters from a former koi dealerships QT pond now retrofitted into our pond].

I buy those blue furnace filter pads they sell at lowes and I also buy buffing machine pads which you can also get at lowes .They wash up easy and are not to expensive .But I saw regular pads on sale at webbs and dr foster and smith and pet solutions .You can also try ebay or amazon if you want regular pads

yep great grandmas also .My great grandson is coming over to see me today he is almost 5 months old now .Love spoiling him .The blue furnace filters at lowes that are reusable are great .I have used them for over 11 years now .The price has gone up on them a lot .I used to pay 1.99 and now they are 6 dollars .I bought a case of them 11 years ago after I realized how well they worked and really easy to smack them against something to get the heavy stuff off and then a quick rinse in a bucket of peroxide and water once in awhile .Most times just smack the heavy stuff off .You can see it in the crate catching the stuff before it goes to the filter and I weigh it and the hose down with a bag of lava rock

I also used the floor buffing pads, pretty cheap and Home Depot or a hardware store that rents floor buffers carries them. Best part is you can get different grades from porous ( usually the black or red) to fine ( white).
For biological media, I use lava/volcano rock, big bag is usually under $5

Not sure why I never thought of using them pads before. I use the lava rocks in my bio filter. Had a guy tell me I needed to buy a fancy filter system for my size pond. But my water is almost always crystal clear and levels test perfect. I don't mind cleaning filters each week. I find it very relaxing :)

If you need to do some really fine filtering, get a bag of $5 poly fill in the sewing isle for pillows or quilt batting. Just make sure it's 100% polyester with no anti-germ additives. I use it in my hang on back tank filters.
