Filter Media

I have been using lava rock for years and love it even though some think it is old fashioned way to filter it sure works for me .I am cheap and try to save every where .I soaked mine and picked out the rougher bigger ones and the ones that floated got put in the plant pots with the kitty litter .Just call me cheap :cheerful: and proud of it .

Thats not called, being cheap, thats being resourceful.



You'd be surprised how much it costs to look this cheap!

I even bought ripped bags for a dollar .I want to try haydite in a filter .I found it at a quarry here but they are only open when they feel like it to the public .Darn rock torture .The creeks around here is where I borrow my rocks from.

Nice rocks, the creeks around here don't have anything like that, or that nice.

We're using the quilt batting as a supplemental-type filter media, primarily aimed at removing the tiny algae cells. It's not usually used in-line with regular media, but mostly to catch the final water as it leaves [for example] a waterfall, before going back into the pond. It's a pretty fine filter media, in danger of clogging your system, and would have to be changed out very frequently or you'd be in danger of having an over-flow.

Is there anything you would suggest i could use in those two filters i posted pictures of aside from spending extemely high prices for the Laguna filter media?

I seen the furnace filters you were using, and i thought about that, maybe i should pick some up tomorrow.
How long do they last, and do you just rinse them in pond water?

I have some that are over 6 years old I am still using .I just hose them off and put them back ,but I do have well water .I don't rinse them alot I try to keep some of the good bacteria on them .I use the also in my extra pick up basket ,furnace filter on top to pick up heavy stuff and quilt batting under to pick up fine stuff and under that lava rock and a bag of crushed oyster shells and activated charcoal
