If I ever filled mine in I would just fill it w/ soil and keep plants in it like it was before. I bet if we ever sell this place I will have to do that cuz I think it might be too deep for regulations here, whoops! I have a fence and net over it so it would be hard for someone to fall into it. A circulating big tall rock or three might be nice w/ water bubbling out of the top. Now I'm thinking I would do something like these below if I ever had to fill it in.

I sometimes think about what we'd do if we had to fill ours in. We had a stone patio built around the pond, after we did the pond...guess we could fill in and enlarge the patio?

My inability to manage our pond due to my health. I cannot get in the pond so I already use a pond maintainence person for thorough seasonal cleaning.
Big Lou I know exactly where your coming from here even I struggle from time to time but I break things down first clean the vortex rest for ten minutes after flushing it through three times .
Then I pay out the hose from my mains and connect that to my dechlorinator and turn the tap on , I make sure I have the right amount of water going in then thats me for 4 hours untl I strip out the hose.
In the spring mid summer and just prior to winter I clean filters 2 and 3 but again I break this down a bit at a time to 10 mins and it takes aproximately 20 mins to clean the filter material and filter .
Note what I'm doing , I live a program , thought out for my by the Pain clinic to manage pain, step outside these 10 minute time stints and I am in big trouble my body goes into pain mode and I cant do a thing about it apart from ride the pain in bed until it disapates
Fybromyalgia is awful I kid you not big Lou its akin to ME the pain is so intense , this is on top of my Osteo Arthritis and other problems brought about by my Motor Bike crash all those years ago , I wouldnt even wish it on my enemys if I had them honsetly my friend .
So keep timing your activities by the pond after 10 minutes relax and have a cup of Tea/Java.
I have another worry my last BP test came back way different to my November one at the diabetoc clinic which was suprisingly that of a 20 year old , then at the foot clinic whilst checking my pulse they found an erratic pulse twice .
Much to say I'm worried but not panicing lets see what my Doctor says first ?
But dont go threating like that my friend , the pond guy will take care of the pond even if you cant so dont fret my friend

I have thought of it also because here ponds are not well liked they are just energy hogs and time to take care of them is not well liked .There is a great home here with a pond but it has been on the market for over 6 years now and is a beautiful setting and has 3 covered porches and 2 decks .My friends loved it but it was way over an 2 hours from our house so they did not want to be that far

Well they have had it on 5 real estates in the last couple of years and they are now down to 69 thousand last time I looked .The house is big but only built back in 1999 .The pond had new pumps and an expensive filtering system

I use a very small pond store/service. It's a two lady business. Work is estimated per job. Very reasonable. The bigger the company the higher the price. Never get a blind price. Have them come out and look at the pond before pricing. I would be hesitant to sign an on-going deal. Seems pond service shops are sometimes "here today, gone tomorrow".

thanks for the info, its good to know for future reference :)

Where a pond is being abandoned, you have a convenient ready made feature for a spectacular bog bed when it is filled with a suitable soil. Say, layers of Autumn leaves, heavy dark loam, creating a fertile, well drained but moisture retaining bed

Specimen plants might include, Rheum, Rodgersia, Arum, Day lilies etc, which thrive and go berserk in such fertile moist soil conditions

A future owner might like to choose to restore the pond, knowing where a pond liner exists...

Regards, andy

Here people waste time cleaning there cars more than they do keeping the landscape up .I am lucky they mow and when they do they mow down to the dirt and all you see is dust clouds .But there cars get washed everyday .They never plant flowers or trees or even shrubs .Some might have veggie gardens but that is about it .To them a house is just to live in .You hardly ever see bird feeders or hummingbird feeders ,they won't waste there money on that.Yard art to them is the broken down old car they are going to restore before it rots into the ground .

Age. You start getting older and can't take care of it anymore. I know a few of my friends that have already started selling off their fish and filling their ponds in.

I refuse to get old and just give up! I am going to be here with my ponds for a very very long time, they will have to take me away kicking and screaming!
