OMG, you tell such a fun story, Waterbug! The only "giant water bugs" I've ever seen were little bitty things, skipping across the water, maybe at most 1" long. Never saw them fly either. Me thinks your childhood imagination ran away with you, huh?!

CountryEscape, not so funny now... Pictures don't do them justice.

JW, they seem bigger when you're 5...and in the water with them. It is partly when my online alias came from.

Last year being the first year of our pond I was surprised to see how many dragon flies found it. As soon as the sun hits the water they come out in full force. I spent many days sitting next to the pond watching the beautiful blue dragon flies flying circles around me. Ponds bring amazing life to your yard and watching them are better than tv's.

I like your basement set up Country! Very MacGyverish

I agree, Pecan. My pond was filled in late May last year, and during the summer I acquired bull frogs, leopard frogs, Northern Cricket Frogs (tiny little guys, BIG mouths though!), red slider baby turtle, several infant alligator snapper turtles, dragonflies and who knows what else. I did nothing to bring them, they found me! Weather is beautiful here in IL this morning, very sunny and not too windy yet, so sat on my deck (east side of house) and enjoyed looking at the fish. They are just hanging out on the bottom, but was still nice to see them. All present and accounted for.
MacGyverish, huh, Pecan? LOL The baby koi love it, and I'm enjoying hand feeding them. Some of them prefer to nibble on my hand and fingers rather than the food. Couple of them climb into the cup of my hand when I feed, too. Only bad thing is that they may come to the edge of the pond if I ever get a heron to come looking for food, so maybe not such a good idea. Going to get some type of outside back yard dog by April to hopefully keep that possibility from happening.
