Does it hurt if my koi have not spawned

Is size necessarily the issue regarding koi spawning? I am thinking it is tied more to the age of the fish. I have had several situation where the younger koi were larger than some of the older koi. One koi in particular that I have is Malaysian and smaller than the others. He has been the same size for several years now and is older than some of my larger fish that were born in my pond. I have to believe as the koi breed and cross breed that genetics being what they are, that they will not always attain the same size given the age they may be - much like people.
