The leaves look very familiar! It may be a castor bean plant.

If it is a castor bean, the next leaves should be a sure sign. These can grow to 10'. Extremely toxic but supposed to keep voles and moles away. Doesnt work!

Thanks for posting that image @mrsclem I don't think they look the same, but perhaps mine is just wishful thinking (don't want a poisonous plant)
Lets see what the next leaf looks like

horrible picture, taken with new phone. will try to get a better one. No luck with another photo. I pulled the plants and potted a few up to move to another location but they wilted in the heat.

I was thinking elm or maple looking at the first new leaf, but let it get bigger and we will see!

The next leaf will be the giveaway. I had one castor plant in the back of the garden last year and it did produce seed so pretty sure that its the same. Its a beautiful huge plant but if you have pets or small children, it's best to not have it. Not poisonous to the touch but all parts are toxic if ingested.

I'm not familiar with Elm trees but I doubt it's a Maple. I have several different Maples to compare and even the seed is different...I'll check after work if we have a forth leaf
