I've only had it running a month now. I did a complete drum dump twice in a month. I put some coarse filter media in the skimmer. Every 2-3 days I pull it out and clean it off. I think Doc does a dump once a week. I want to do the dump once a month because my property is sloped and the water runs onto my neighbor's lawn. I tried running a garden hose from the dump valve to the front of my house but the force isn't there to really clean it out that way.

Get a 2" hose they sell at swimming pool places. It rolls up like a ribbon and doesn't take up any space. That way, you can divert it to the street or wherever.

I just wanted to say that the filter is still giving me clear water. I do have algae growing on the sides and on the stems of my lillies, but I can still see the bottom. It's weird, the algae isn't bad in the morning. By sundown, it's horrible. It's like it blooms during the day and hibernates at night? I can pull it off but it just comes back. Doc, should your filter be combatting this or do I have another problem? I don't mind it because the water is still clear and it makes the pond look more natural in my opinion. I'd rather not have it but it's not horrific.

That is algae mixed with muck from the bottom. Use a net and or vacuum to clean the bottom and if you get better circulation it will not accumulate there. Once you have more circulation, the doc bio filter will trap it and your problem will go away.
I get that at times in my upper pond unless I run the big waterfall.
