Finalized the elevation for the negative edge weir this morning and roughed out milk crate footprint. Looks like when all is said and done, I should get somewhere between 2000 - 2500 gallons of storage.

Also ran across a This Old House Video with a brief overview on using a heat exchanger to heat your pool using your AC refrigerant lines. Wonder if that could be a good option for a pond, too. Think it's generally a bad idea to add extra heat to a pond in the summer time, but if it only raises the temp marginally (would depend on water volume) and also boosts your AC efficiency, seems like it could be a useful addition.

Hey i give the man credit for researching every avenue. But ...there's that but. There does come a time to stop the planning feet your hands dirty and learn from your mistakes. With all your research I'd believe those mistakes will be minimal adjustments.

You remind me of my husband. I say "we should repaint the living room" and the next thing I know, we're remodeling the entire house because "if we're going to paint, we MIGHT AS WELL re-do the dry wall, and if we're going to re-do the drywall, we MIGHT AS WELL look into the HVAC venting issue, and if we're re-doing the venting we MIGHT AS WELL... ". You get my point. It's like the kid's book "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie". And his hobby is watching YouTube videos on the latest and greatest in building techniques. Nothing is ever simple around here!

Although... I did end up with a pond because I put a bug in his ear to start researching alternative ways to store water for emergency use. We agreed that it was a good idea, but I wasn't in favor of a dozen big blue barrels in my basement that had to be emptied and refilled every six months. One day I said "what about underground water storage?" and the rest is history!

BUILD THAT POND MAN!

@Lisak1: Your husband and I would get along. Pretty much every home improvement project around here goes like this:

I was meaning to ask about your water storage for emergency drinking water: If you have a pond attached to your cistern, when it comes to actually drinking the water, what's the difference between drinking the pond water and drinking the cistern water? It's all the same water requiring the same filtration for safe drinking, no?

Correct. My initial idea though was underground water storage WITHOUT a pond. Then we realized it was best to have a way to keep the water circulating, so I suggested "well how about an adorable, small, cute, tiny, decorative, pretty bubbling boulder?". And then things went cray cray. Per usual.

You think so, huh? Just yesterday we were discussing our next project - master bath remodel. We have a project budget, but suddenly we were moving a window which meant replacing siding on two sides of the house, which means replacing all the siding which means we just added 30K to the price of the bathroom. We clearly agreed "no moving the plumbing" but now the toilet HAS to be on the other wall, because window...

Such is my life!

Oh man, our kitchen remodel is gradually encroaching on the rest of the house for this exact reason. Well we should do the kitchen window, and the windows in the adjacent room, but then we'll have to restucco that whole side of the house. We're going to redo the rest of the 50 year old windows in the house eventually, maybe we should just get it all out of the way...
