Here is what I read on cull koi:
they may have deformities, or colors which are undesireable (e.g. white, carp brown, or dull orange). These koi should not be purchased as pets. They are typically purchased by people looking to feed live fish to preditory animals such as catfish, cichlids, or even turtles.
obvious deformaties are just the first cull, missing fins, tail, eyes etc..
there can be a few, or more culls after that. depending on color variations, patterns, koi breed type, etc... one thing i've learned about koi, is what one person likes is definately not what everybody likes. i've had people argue over fish that i thought about culling.

I have koi and shubunkins in my pond, with a few comets here and there. I never imagined that I would have babies in my first year, and as they are coming (a lot at a time), the kookiest ones are the cutest. True the brown/silver are boring, but I cannot imagine pulling them out. (Although I have no issue doing that to tads!!!)

Koi/Shubunkins/ I think they are adorable.. these were the very first

Just check and see if they have birth defects. If they are still colorful and don't have birth defects they will probably be great for a pond. I never cull, I usually don't have very many fry survive anyway so if I culled I would have none left! I even have a koi who's going on about 7 inches now who has a defect in his head. His head is very asymmetrical and almost has the appearance of being attached crooked. He does just fine in the pond though. He's one of my two fry that survived the first year that my fish spawned. He adds character.

None of my Koi are show quality, I have 2 that are missing fins, gives them character I think :hurting:....I enjoy feeding them and watching them swim, 2 of them just have to try harder.....:)

My husband and I named our place DORKY RANCH, so you can see that we tolerate a great deal of uniqueness.

One thing.. I have not gotten a picture, they move quickly, but some of the little guys look as though they have streamers on their sides. Wh-what???

I have absolutely no idea what that could be... If you're correct you might have a strange new variety of butterfly koi :D maybe it's just their pectoral fins? I'm not sure. Try and get pictures :)

"Mutant fish at DORKY RANCH. Film at eleven"

Please let me remind you that I am a newbie, so what I'm seeing could be perfectly normal

I would just look at them and make sure they are all intact w/ no visible sign of disease and choose them for what looks good to me.

I like your DORKY RANCH name too waldetta
