I see something called " cull koi" for sale , they look OK to me ,may be not that colorful , still pretty . Is there more to it or just fish was unfortunate to be born uglier than rest of it ?

Basically sounds like someone trying to get koi that are higher quality i.e. color conformation etc. So they go through the herd and remove any they think are not good enough.
I am not a koi keeper, so am not sure what to tell you to watch out for if you pick some up.

Usually "culled" fish, imho, should be free, they don't want them. A lot of keepers feed culled fish to chickens etc. At least I have seen that posted.

They are quite simply that dont make the grade , there are continual culls from hen they are fry onwards , fry are euthanized but the ones picked may not make the grade they are larger and cant be uthanized as it would be unethical to do so , they then pick again and so forth until they come yp with those final few koi that are destined to far greater fame/
The give them tags to attrack buyers in Pet shops and garden centre aquatic outlets like AA o AAA koi making the buyer think they are getting a good quality koi .
To put it plainly and simply they are rejects the breeders and dealers can make a little money on thats all .

Here is what I read on cull koi:
they may have deformities, or colors which are undesireable (e.g. white, carp brown, or dull orange). These koi should not be purchased as pets. They are typically purchased by people looking to feed live fish to preditory animals such as catfish, cichlids, or even turtles.

As noted they are being gotten rid of because they are not up to the standard of the current owner. I look on Koiphen infrequently but notice that I usually don't care for the fish those guys think are worth $10,000 or more but prefer the ones I like based more on colors that I like. To each their own.

Most of the carp in my pond would not be purchased by hobbyist fish keepers due to that they are NOT Koi but non-ornamental Mirror Carp. These are the fish I want in my pond and nobody is going to tell me what I can/should buy. If you don't mind "not up to the standard" fish, then by all means grab yourself a deal at that price as I know that I would be doing the same!!!! I have seen some fish that nobody wanted when they were small because of imperfections, turn in to some of the most stunning looking fish I have seen!!! Everything is in the eye of the beholder and your pond is exactly that, your pond!!! As long as they are free from health issues that could be transmitted, then no problems at all IMHO.

Just to be clear, that was a cut and paste from a website on culled koi. Not my personal thoughts. My pond has a bizarre collection of whatever I want in it too.

I understood that Priscilla, and maybe it would have been better not to have removed part of the post. My apologies.
