@turtlemom, Nuphar lutea/yellow water lily/brandy bottle. Can grow in depths of up to 5metres! It's often seen in large lakes here in the UK, as Meyer says the blooms look like big buttercups held above the water, they smell alcoholic...like brandy...apparently! Never got that close to sniff at one :)

Was just reading about an EU ban on the water hyacinth due to it not dying off in winter in places like spain. Not sure how badly it effects the UK?

A total EU ban? Don't get me going on the EU. Doubt anyway if it would overwinter here in the UK, Spain is different animal, much higher average temps there. My water hyacinths have gone mad this season. I over wintered three last year in my unheated g/h, by keeping them in the lidded plastic pint sized containers that I bought them in. There must be easily 2 dozen or more today, will need some more containers come this winter.

Not sure about total but they're pushing for it I think, it spreads like a plague because doesn't die off in winter over there. But the UK are saying it dies off here so isn't an issue. Will be looking at getting some next spring as think it's too late to start this year.
