My corkscrew grass doesn't seem to be doing too well. It appeared to be growing in last year, and it looked like some new stems were growing up from the base here in the past month, but I am not seeing any new stems growing above the water surface, and the old stems seem to be slowly dying off.

My understanding is that this plant could go a little deeper than most marginals. Where I have them in the gravel, the crown of the plants are about 5-6 inches below the water surface, and last year the roots did grow out quite a bit. Should I just be patient and see if they start sending up more stems, or did I plant them in a really bad place?

from what I am reading up to 4 inches deep. Not sure if that is a hard fast rule.

I had no luck with them in my pond but they sure grew great in my landscape bed under my curly willow .I wonder if they like shade better or just don't like salt in the water

The clump I have that is still doing really well was in pretty shallow water, so I'm guessing the 4" depth is probably my problem. Tomorrow I'll move all of them up to more shallow water and see what other grasses/rushes I can find that grows in the 6-12" range. The corkscrews still look like they can be saved, and maybe if I plant some near the edge of the 4" mark, some will creep out further over time.

I keep mine with the crown just above the water, It;s doubled in size since lat year. i noticed when i had it with the crown just under the water more of the older leaves would just hang in the water and eventually die off, once I raised it it started putting out more leaves that were standing straight up and really took off. I think mine may need divided by the end of this season if it continues.

Well, big surprise today... I went to move the corkscrews, and cleared away all the algae that had grown up around them, and I found a large number of new shoots coming up on all of the plants! I did go ahead and move the plant that was sitting in 8" of water (its now in about 5" of water), but even that one had a really well established root-ball holding it down. I'm just going to leave the rest alone and see what happens. It seems they are healthier than they appeared.

In other news, I discovered my two little floating hearts have come back up! They are so tiny, I really hope they are able to grow in better this year. It doesn't look like they've grown at all since I got them last year.

That is neat! I just saw my 4 leaf clover growing again, I yanked out all the old roots, stems, so it is starting over. Everything is growing like crazy this year, must be the warm winter, it never stopped. My 4getmenot is going crazy, even blooming already.

I had looked at the floating hearts, thought it would not survive our winters here............need to relook at it

I was told by one of the local nurseries this week that the forget-me-nots and chameleon plants are the same species as the regular plants they sell (and much cheaper than the aquatics) - and both do well as marginals. Unfortunately they did not have either plant in stock yet in either their regular or aquatic sections... but its good knowledge to have, because I'm trying to get both plants going again this year.

I tried to stick the Chameleon plant in my pond in between the rocks but it pooped out and died. Maybe too sunny? Grew too well in the ground and yanked it all out. It tried to come back every year and take over but I won finally. Would like it in the pond tho but guess it won't work there for me anyways. Forget me not grows good in the pond in the rocks tho.Never tried the corkscrew grass.

JW, I think the chameleon plant is the one the nursery guy told me to keep in the pond, as they will go nuts in landscaping, and are VERY hard to kill. He said that Roundup will not kill it, and it's really invasive! Beware about that! I have mine in the new bog, and so far it's living. It's chilly here again today, only 40's so far (which was our low), but supposed to get up close to 60. I want our late February/early March weather back, thank you very much!
