Unless I'm mis-remembering [which isn't a stretch], don't they tend to turn more carnivorous as they grow? Or was that the pleco....? Anyway, my 2 cents, even if they did survive the climate, they're probably never going to be big enough to realistically take care of any algae -- they'll just end up adding to your total fish population.

Not really, they usually hit a "line" when they reach ( like I said for example) a certain length, then they just go on an all out killing spree.
