I guess that would be goldfish .My pond starts at 2 goes to 4 and watch if you have raccoons do not give them places to step into the pond .I have koi and goldfish but koi get bigger than goldfish and can outgrow the pond fast .Not sure about there cold temps in NJ and how goldfish would hold up but know a few here that have them and they work out fine .Koi can take cold better

are you sure koi do better than goldfish in cold water ... i thought it was the other way round ?

Eagles fan you may want to check your ordinances there Passaic County has so many on there books and if your neighbors see what your doing may turn you in .I know that Edison only allowed them in the backyard had to be fenced and could only be a certain size and electrical had to be inspected and even had to have a fire marshalls approval ,I guess in case of a fire maybe men would not fall in .Never understood that water does not burn and they had to be ten ft from the nearest structure and ten ft. from the property line .I know Camden will not allow them at all not even pondless .Union had strict laws too

Are there different kinds of goldfish that can take cold better .My friend Sandy in Nj forgot to take her goldfish in for the winter 2 years ago and they all died .Now she has 2 koi and they are fine in the winter her pond is small but deeper and she has a heater in it ,she was afraid her goldfish would get cold on the cooler nights before she took them in .I could not understand because I have koi and goldfish and have never lost any of them ,so I thought some might be hardier than others .Even jw asked me about my calico fancy tails surviving the winters in my pond .I have had them in my pond for 5 years and have not had one of them die .I know goldies can take more abuse in that they can take water neglect more and changes in water quality .They are even tougher in really cold weather .Is it the kind of goldfish .I know they are a lot less fussy than koi .Northern NJ winters can get pretty harsh at times .

With that you would call the building department and ask them they are in your town hall and they can give you some answers over the phone but tell them your lot size the size of pond and be honest and friendly it helps .If you are not the owner of the house or over 18 you may have problems getting those answers .If you do not have neighbors that are snoopy or nasty and can not look into your yard and know what you have then you may be able to get away with it but also there is the homeowners insurance policy part if your homeowners policy find you have one and are not insured for it they can cancel homeowners policy stating safety concerns .They consider them like pools in most parts of NJ unless you keep it small and fenced in .I know here in VA I had to add mine to my homeowners policy it was only 5 dollars extra a year here .I know my homeowners policy in NJ was not cheap a year and we had Allstate for car and home but when they pulled out of Jersey we went to Prudential .Pondless waterfalls they seem to have no problems with .I had one in my front yard and all that was required was fire and electrical inspection .Cost me 45 dollars for them . The building department will give you most of the answers .If you choose to go that way

Rules and license info there but on pools and could find nothing else .I tried search box too and all I could find was for commercial ponds .I put in the search box ponds fish ponds and homeowner pond and it kept giving me laws for fishing on the Passaic river .yuk .I did find one that says all construction permits are 25 dollars for anything on single family house including pools

With shelves you accumulate poop from the fish and also a step for raccoons and heron. You won't be sorry with steep walls and a bottom drain.

I have steep sides but have plant shelves on the 4 ft. deep side of my pond that are only six inches from the bottom .So I figure they would be alright .I have never seen a heron or raccoon around here and trapped the possum and took him a good 20 miles away to a nice farm he will enjoy better .Hope he stays there too .All we get here is those big birds that eat road kill and it's against the law here to harm them and 1 barn owl with 1 eye that wild animal rescue came and captured to fix the damage to his injured eye .Poor thing must have ran into a branch and it was still sticking in his eye .They e-mailed me and said he is doing better and sent a pic of him .They said he was a baby .He was so cute .They said they would keep him at the rescue because he could not live in the wild

Speaking of "ratting out by neighbors", I was visited by a young police officer  circa 9am by my work-in-progress-pond in the Summer of 2009. The cop was friendly and gave me no troubles  . He said he dropped in to investigate because of "an anonymous phone call." He looked around, and wished me luck with the pond, then left.
