And a bunch of 1/4 holes can add up to a very large opening which results in virtually zero draw.

Normally the purpose of a bottom drain is to remove large matter before it can decay down into small bits that could fit into a 1/4" hole. Most ponders are trying to not have that decay process happen inside the pond. But different strokes for different folks.
