Can someone help me understand how one controls the flow rate through a bog filter?

My pond is kinda large so I am set to buy a 4000+ GPH submersible pump that will force water up through the bog I am constructing. My worry is that the water will get pushed up through the bog too quickly for the filtration/cleaning to work its magic.

Pond is 16’ X 11’ X 3’
Bog is 8.5’ X 4’ X 1.25’ (the bog is 2 feet above the pond and it‘s outlet waterfalls back into the pond)

The best way is to split the feed to the bog you can have the second outlet dump on top of the bog for extra waterfall water or you can have that dump into the pond for a return jet. either way put shut off valves on Both so you can control where the water goes. you are correct that you want the water to pass through as slow as possible giving bacteria and plants a chance to do their job and cleans the water.

4000k maybe a little low but its all in how good a Stewart that you will be. Are you going to have a lot of fish do you feel you need to feed them three times a day, or will you have 6 koi and some minnows or 12 goldfish and minnows. the more you have the more you feed the larger the system should be

I plan on not having Koi. I want a lot of plants instead, most of them in the bog but floaters in the pond, as well. I do want goldfish though.

My bigger concern is the summers here in the Arizona desert. I anticipate I will have a never ending struggle with algae blooms, and hope this bog filter will give me the best chance to mitigate that.

@GBBUDD : Do you really feel 4000GPH is in the low side for a pump on this pond? I thought I calculated correctly.

YOUR pond is RIGHT AT 4000 Gallons IF YOU STAY WITH NO FISH YOU WON'T HAVE ANYTHING FOR THE PLANTS TO LIVE OFF OF ITS THEIR WASTE THAT MAKES OR GIVES THE PLANTS THE ENERGY TO EXPLODE. sorry for caps. I'M firm believer in over filtration but if you stay the course your planning you should be ok. @addy1 was in arizona with her pond a few moons ago we'll see what she thinks

My pond in Arizona was large, 14000 gallons, filtered by a 4 foot high waterfall, full of lava rock and, pea gravel, some plants. The waterfall fed into a stream that flowed to the pond. The constant water flow kept it cooler. I only had a excess algae bloom in early spring.
The stream had plants to help filter the pond.

Just goldfish.

If I was there redoing it, I would have a large bog filter.

I had a 1200 gallon pond in Cottonwood, nothing but goldfish, some plants and a skippy tub filter. String algae was not a big issue but the Heron was. Now I have a bigger bog and have discovered how well Hydrogen Peroxide slows down the string algae. Oh, and mosquito dunks are your friend.
Welcome.

It's a myth that sunshine and hot weather leads to algae. It's the presence of excess nutrients in the water. Sunshine and heat helps algae just like it does anything else in the plant world, but with no food it won't survive.
