I can answer one question - you need the water to get to the bottom one way or the other. You can do that two ways - either cut a hole to plumb directly into the bottom (you'd need to use a gasket or bulkhead to stop the barrel from leaking around the pipe) OR you can put the pipe up over the edge and down into the bottom. Either way works fine. The second way will avoid the leaking issue, but it does leave you with some plumbing you need to conceal. Bring it from the back, up close to the side, over the edge and back down and you'd barely see it once the plants start growing.

In my head now I'm picturing the barrel, sitting on the top of the pond in the corner with a water fall going back into the pond. Was the water fed in through the bottom or the side of the barrel?
I had it plumbed into the side. Water went up and out. I was in Arizona at the time, power shut off they dried a bit, started leaking a little, but the wood swelled again once the water was running again. I did not worry about leaching it did not bother the fish at all.

This is long enough ago i would need to search photo albums to find a picture.

I can just see it now; addy watching her fish on the videocam and noting how wobbly they look as they pass. Some ponders really know how to treat their fish, though! :)

That's great, I wouldn't have to worry about it drying out, the far north of Scotland isn't dry for that long.

I've seen the tires in a couple ponds over there. What is the purpose for them.

The trickle shower is where I got the idea to inject air into my bogs snorkel. I use to use bio balls and live rock to filter my reef tank . It was of my own design at the time with a double drip tray . Never had to worry about dry spots. And when I fire up the pond I have no aromas of hydrogen sulfide after being idle all winter.

mine sits all winter without a tower, without air, turn it on and it smells like pond water. Usually off from Oct / Nov until March, April
