Howard had a good point. Some foam is not fish safe. The stuff I used was the fiber (Polyester) batting used to cover foam when upholstering. It was a roll and it was about 1 1/2 inches thick. The fibers were fused together so there wasn't a chance they would float around in the water.

Try Barley Straw , They sell it on Amazon. It might take two to four weeks for steady results but it works. It made the water cloudy for a couple of days then it cleared up. The directions let you know that's gona happen. And you have to swap them out every five months.

I've used barley straw b/4; now i'm using liquid barley. Ok, so you just go to the fabric store and ask for some batting, then place it under where water is flowing thru, correct?
Also, would my Aquascape Ultra Klean filter considered to be a bio filter or mechanical? and which do you guys like best?

Yes the water has to flow through the batting. I have mine prior to the bio filter to keep solids out of it.

Could you use one of those thick furnace filters over a rubbermaid tote? I wonder if that would pull solid waste out of the water. It filters air, so I imagine it would catch a lot of little particles.

OH I imagine some sort of filter tower with multiple layers of the furnace filters in it. Water trickles down through the top and exits the bottom crystal clear.
