Thank you for all the photos. We will be building a wooden bog but was thinking of using liner. I like the preformed liber you have. Where did you get it?

hi irmfran, the liner i have came from my local pet store unfortunately i dont think they will deliver to the usa as we are in england and its quite a long way to you guys. on another note i now have gravel ready to be washed and loaded into the bog just waiting for a break in some pretty cold and wet weather, later today it should brighten a little bit so will crack on then. i will update with some pics aswell.

Hello and welcome, @IrmFran! Why not go over to our “introductions” topic and tell us about yourself and your pond! We love pictures, if you have any to share!

We converted our barely used 30’ by 15’ concrete pool to a fish pond. We mostly have goldfish and koi, we started the conversion almost 4 years ago.

Before converting to a pond I came across videos of pool owners who were very happy with their choice; also the emphasis of these videos was how easy it was to convert to a pond; barely any work or equipment needed. I convinced my husband it would be a fun project.

As much as I love the idea of not using chemicals in a pool nobody used, I must confess it has been a lot work, expense and disappointment. And at times I have felt we need to give up, but I also really want this to work.

We still have very green water, we have lost a lot of fish, plants etc. Our fish are always hiding.

equipment we currently have are
1-15,000 gal aerator
2-5000 gal aerators
Waterfall with Bog filter, 2200 GPH pump.
Bog filter is not really working, it is too small. We are going to build a larger bog using a rectangular shaped box. We are waiting for fall weather to start on that that project.
We are on a tight budget so we have to do everything ourselves and we are not that young anymore.

Your advice will be greatly appreciated. Very glad I found this forum.

thank you in advance

hi irmfran, beautiful looking pond you have shame about the green water, if you go to the introductions section and post your intro there a lot of knowledgeable people will help you to sort your green water problem and answer any other questions you may have. it also helps if you give as much info on your pond size, depth fish quantities and size, filtration. hope this helps and welcome to a very friendly knowledgeable forum !!!

Welcome to our forum!

Love your pond it is beautiful, love all the plants around it.

Is the bog pump the only one you have? That is a lot of water to only move 2000 gallons a hour. I move around 6000 gallons a hour through my bog which is quite large.

How big is yours? I looked but did not spot your bog area. That first picture is that the bog? It looks full of plants, did you do a barrier bog? Are the pipes pushing water up and through the plants or just flowing water over them. Are they in pea gravel or just in the pond.

I'd also add a bunch of floating plants; provide protection via net pots if your fish like to munch. If you protect the roots, the floaters will do a great job.

Also, with your Fla sun, you're going to benefit greatly from the shade the floaters will provide. Typically, I aim for 60% coverage.

If Addy is right, you should consider pushing more water through a gravity bog, something that is higher than your pond and can 'gravity feed' back. You want the pea stone to be totally colonized with bacteria as that's whre most of the magic happens. If you can, try to make your bog surface area 30% of the pond's. This will also give you more aeration, though by the sounds of it, you have a lot already.

hi everyone, well i think im pretty much done for now 1 tonne of gravel moved, graded and washed and put in my bog. it is now on and running. im looking to add more plants as i go along.P1000399.JPGP1000392.JPGP1000397.JPGP1000403.JPGP1000410.JPGP1000406.JPGP1000407.JPGP1000414.JPG P1000415.JPGP1000416.JPGthis has been such an interesting project to undertake from locating equipment and gravel to moving soooooo much gravel to washing the gravel at my "gravel washing station" grading the bloody gravel. can you tell i have been around the gravel too long ? none of this would have happened if i hadnt found this forum and wonderful members who help and offer/give good advice just out of there love for all things pond. with the state of the world at the moment it is so refreshing to find a bit of normality in discussing ponds with like minded people ! escapism at its finest thank you all. i have no doubt i will be looking to add a much bigger bog in the future as i have the space and just love the way they look and hopefully perform,as it costs about $150 a month to run my mechanical stuff. that money could be spent elsewhere.hope you have enjoyed my project pics as much as i have doing it. once again thank you all

Yes, about the pump, I didn't realize I needed to move the entire volume every hour. We are redoing the bog using A much larger stock tank. For now we can't afford a larger pump, so it will have to wait. Thank you

We are building A new bog filter with
a stock tank that will be outside the pool. In the shallow end I have a lot of plants but we
Did not build a barrier wall. Plants are in pea gravel in pond containers. I only have aerators in the bottom of pond. No pipes moving water. Any ideas where to buy a larger pump, we need to get at least 8000gph I think

Does the old pool pump still work? They move a lot of water. Mine, designed for a 16' above ground pool moves about 86 gallons per minute. I would build the bog out of lumber, and install a liner. About 8x12 would be a nice size. Any shape you want. Only needs to be about a foot deep. So you could use pressure treated 2x12, or plywood, cut to four 8'strips per sheet. (close enough to 12") And waterfall back to the pond.
