The plumbimg will stay in the pond. Again I like things easy and the thought of digging up the yard and flower beds if an issue with the plumbing ever occurs does not sound easy.

My husband just brought up a good point about "looking natural'. I have never seen a natural pond with rocks in the bottom. Every natural pond I have seen (which admittedly is not a lot living in the desert) and all the nautral ponds my husband has seen (which is a lot being from NE Oklahoma) have had mud and muck bottoms. With frogs, snakes, cows and pigs pooping in it. He says "natural ponds" are just big toilets for animals.

Now rocks in streams, I have seen, but rocks in ponds... nope. So what are these "natural" rock bottom ponds you speak of?

To me and many others, maybe not from this forum, realize a water feature is as important to look at under water as above. Shelfs and plumbing is not natural looking. So smooth & deep should work.

Rivers and waterfalls have rocks. Ponds don't have waterfalls or much rock. So us garden pond lovers want everything. So why not rocks? Or why with rocks? It can work and look great with rocks if done correctly.

It's no problem. Just run underground rated flex hose. It will last as long as the liner if the good quality one. Not the cheap home depot version. Also it can run only few inches below ground surface.

Not to seem offensive or steriotypical but you Canadians can be some of the rudest people. Opinions are opinions and you can't change that. Also learn some grammer and spelling. I had to read your post a few times to make sence of it. Sorry I'm having to come off on you like this but your starting to get on my nerves. If the rest of us can do our part in being respectfull to others I don't see why it's so hard for you.

Wow calling the kettle black lol. As soon as I said all rock I got attacked from almost everyone, not to pleasant either to have my experience and knowledge trashed.

LOL I will ignore your unpleasant views of us Canadians. I'm sure you mean just me and not all?? And I'm not a writer, but did high school finish, but writa speaka englaze not well good maybe!

Wayne I'm going to appologize for some of the things I said. Some people like rock bottom and some don't. It depends on the person building and designing the pond.

Rock lined ponds look nice if they're small or shallow. But that's just my opinion. If everyone's pond looked the same with the same ideas, there would probably be no need for forums other than troubleshooting.

Certainly opinions don't need to be argued over and I know I did my part in the argument. So I'm sorry. Lets be friends again. :)

I deserved some abuse, Just not all of Canada lol.

All I want is the rock question to be explored some more. Not just cast aside as an idiot idea with 0 value.

Sure yes I like your opinions, especially on fountains lol, so lets put this behind us.

Oh, apologize is 1 p or 2 p? LOl. Just jabbing ya,

I have too much time on my hands, ok going to dig that trench!

First off, Lets get this clear, as Dr. Dave has said, We are watching this topic closely. Wayne, Everyone gets it. YOU like rock. this has been a very well to get along group/forum for a very long time without much moderator interference. I would like to keep it that way. This is a good topic and and we will allow it to stay open only if it settles down. Consider this the warning. Fountainman, lets keep the insults of orgin out of the topic, Thank you for the apology and the post to get this back on topic.

Rocks or no rocks and why is fine. Opinions are appreciated.

I personally like both, had both. I can appreciate anyone that can sucsessfully keep a well stocked rock bottom pond. It usually shows dedication to the pond owner. Myself, Only Rocks on the bottom for me are two large ones used for making a hiding shelf. The maintance wasn't worth the extra look in a large pond to me.

1st two pics no rocks, last three with rocks. Which one looks better?

Larkin the new ponds sure are coming along! Looking great, and honestly I can't tell the difference in the with/without rocks ponds.

I like the idea of using rocks for the underwater plant shelves! Makes for easy digging rather than trying to carve out higher dirt spots by hand.

Actually I like both. Your ponds are an example of what my dream pond would look like. Fish look happy. Plants are healthy. What I wouldn't give to have those ponds. I still have 3/4 of my yard left to design something better than what I have right now. Those photos further inspire me.

Still perfer liner bottom. Pond looks natural or bottomless. Componets blend in better considering most componets are made of black plastic.

I guess I'm more into the fish, than the actual water feature. Obviously I have to to soften the look of my "outdoor aquarium" with some plants in and around it, but for the entire first year the liner was just there, not even covered on the edges of the pond, no rocks or anything, it was a hole with a liner. Mainly it started with me wanting more fish, and not enough room inside for more aquariums.

SO I believe its all in what you're main intent was, Was your main goal to keep fish, or was it to create a beautiful fountain piece and then added some fish? was your goal just to make a feature that was as low maintenance as possible? what was your budget? There are many factors that could be a driving force as to how people create their feature.

I agree. Honestly I love ponds. Before this topic rocks never occured to me. My pond I've tryed almost everything. Anything looks beautiful in it's own way. I too love fish. They add movement to the garden. I've got my pond stocked with fish and love them as family. A pond is like a canvas. It's a peice of our personalities. I'm sure we all have put a bit of our selves in making our ponds our own. And I think that's the best thing about water gardening. At least that's how I think of it.
