Good observation! I have noticed that UV from the sun and natural growth in your pond both contribute to the colors developing and their intensity.

Yeah, this was't a subtle change in color it was like wow! Makes me reconsider what I had previously considered to be a nuisance......Unless the cold water caused this effect............It was'nt sunlight as the pond was covered.

Your fish will eat the algae even while feeding on added pond food. That is why I promote the allowance of string algae, while maintaining it by removing excess by hand.

We have found that the cooler water intensifies the colors on the fish.
Each fall and winter our fish are much deeper in color.

Aha! I did not know this....interesting.........

I just quit feeding officially two days ago. It got suddenly chilly with frost in the morning. I still have the pump and waterfall running, but I figure I'll turn that off in another two weeks. I'm just waiting for the filter to catch a few tiny leaves that managed to make it through the netting. The leaves are almost all done off the trees here, but the wind does whip the last ones off every now and again.

I think next year I need to try a netting that is more screen like. I did not consider some of these seeds coming down off the trees...I was just thinking about big leaves.

My pond temps are at 55 most of the winter and I'm feeding twice a week,
Jan & Feb I'll stop feeding for about 6 weeks to let the females absorb their eggs.

no not neccessarily.. they dont seem to always know whats best for them! when your pond temps fall their digestive system slows and they may not be able to process what theyve eaten, leading to infections, blockages, and further even deadly consequences...if they truly need to eat they can forage in the pond on dead alge etc.. under 50* they are on their own!!

Right. It's like a little kid that will ask for cake all the time instead of a nutritious apple. You don't indulge just because they're asking...they don't know any better, but you do.

Until you can ensure the water temp is above 55 there is no feeding. Don't worry, they won't starve!
