how about using a male and female conduit fittings? You can find 'em in the electrical aisle. They are those grey fittings and create a really tight fit.

Never thought of that will definately check that out. I need to get moving on a filter soon, I'm thinking that a 55 gallon drum would be overkill with slightly over 400 gallons. Thank you.

oh, if you're using a drum, they the conduit fittings will be perfect for you! Look at my two filter builds on the DIY forum. One is for my stock tank and the other is for my 55g drum. You can see I used male/female conduit on both. Cheap and easy!

If using PVC fittings use 1 conduit female and 1 male PVC plumbing.
The tapered threads on both don't really get tight enough to close on the barrel.
But with the mismatched fittings they work great.

Right, that's the thing about using two PVC fittings--they don't screw in all the way together. Conduit does because of the way it's threaded.
