It's a device that permits important gas exchanges to occur when your pond freezes over. Unlike other devices like deicers, it uses way less energy. 40 watts to be exact. Some drivers can use 300, 750 or even as much as 1500 watts.What's a pond breather??
There's a very small pump that hangs under the water that pumps a small amount of water up through a clear plastic tube that towers above the water. In that clear plastic tower is a low wattage heat tape that ensures that it doesn't freeze up.
If you weren't aware, there needs to be at least a small opening in the ice to let out the bad gasses that can accumulate.
Obviously, if your climate is warm and you don't get ice, you don't need anything like this.
