When we lived back in IL, we used to put a potted Umbrella Palm in our (Aquascape) Biofall. Every year that silly plant sent roots out of the planting container, down through the bag of lava rock ("the" thing to use in a bio fall at the time) and both filter pads; binding the entire contents of the Biofall into one, huge, filtering mass. All well & good until it needed to be removed for cleaning in the Spring. The year we could no longer physically lift it ourselves & had to hire a pond company to do so -- well, that's the LAST time we put a papyrus of any sort in the Biofall! LOL.

Wowzers! That explains the "star" pattern. I planted King Tut papyrus in my big flower pots on my patio a few years in a row. They were beautiful and grew so fast! But they were so hard to get out of the pots once they died, that I finally had to give up planting them. I had to use a pickaxe to chop them up to put them in the compost pile. love them, but dreaded dealing with them at the end of the season!
