Had to shut my pump off this morning 7deg outside with 6" of snow
I new it was coming and drained 2 of my drums and lines ,earlier this week .
and left 1 drum on that is easier to deal with..I had to get my drill out with a long bit to get the water to drain out the end of my drain but it all drained out.
The 2" outlet at my water fall almost froze shut, even with a heavy flow of water ,:surfing: but i had no water loss

I don't get it, you are further South than I am... Do you not run any kind of heater in your pond? I'm really hoping that going to a larger pond doesn't cause too much trouble, because I run my pump year-round.

I has couplers at the edge of my pond. All I do is disconnect everything that exits the pond and through my plumbing into the pond so the water circulates all winter. Just leave my pumps in. About once a week I go out to it and remove some ice around my fountain so it doesn't freeze totally over :yikesu:

27goldfish, Couplers! Good idea. Hey, I'm curious. What does your ice-covered-fountain look like? Have you any photos to share here?

Sissy, I ditto your old man winter comments. I still have my pond covered up for 2 reasons:

1) to keep the old man winter at bay (Temp's 30ish degrees last night!), and

2) to shield the pond water from birds' droppings. I don't want my fishies eat the droppings which may be laced with west nile virus :yikesu:. I kid you not, see this photo:

DSC01818.jpg

These migratory blackbirds have dumped their droppings all over my yard, including my pond-cover. Without the cover, the droppings would sink and land on the bottom of my pond. My fishies would eat any droppings because they've been fasting for over 2 months. No thanks, my fishies can do without WEST NILE VIRUS, seriously.

Ha now what you mean I lived in Nj all my life and for some reason as spring was coming my yard would get covered with noisy blackbirds .As soon as the bugs came up the birds came in .Sometimes I swear it was a sea of black out there .The noise they made was incredible and they would fight like crazy and when something scared them all my trees would look black because of all the birds in them ,

It says here the only way to get WNV is to get bitten from a mosquito no matter what kind of animal you are

jw, mosquitos only? May be, but... other experts suggest differently.

PegionChild_01.jpg

"Pigeons are sometimes called sky rats, and rightfully so, say pest control experts. Pigeon feces carry at least 36 diseases, some potentially fatal, including histoplasmosis and West Nile virus, and their droppings can accumulate into a dangerous and slippery mess, experts say."

The above experts have implied that pets can get the viruses from birds' droppings.

My commonsense tells me this: If droppings of birds (pigeons, migratory birds, etc...) are a reservoir of viruses, then I reckon that fishies ( dogs, or cats) may get sick by viruses when they suck up every drop of the birds' feces.
To play safe, I cover my pond anyway. :fish::surprised:

This if from the Center of Disease Control and they say you can only get it through the blood only and not from touching or kissing. They do not mention eating the feces tho. If you want to really be safe it does not hurt to cover of course and then there is always the question on whether to trust everything our govt. tells us.........hmmmmmmmmmm?
