@dieselplower @mariobrothersleeve Children children please !!!!.....
Algae is a plant and like a plant it takes in co2 during the day giving us oxygen , at night like any other plant it goes into reverse.
To much in the way of nutrients can cause algae to bloom , my pond is covered sides and bottom with a thin covering of algae, thankfully I dont have a problem with string algae and never have had.
I put this down to regulasr maintence of the pond and its systems .
Potasium Permanganate can be used to kill it but your also nuking the rest of your system so extra airstones should be added .
Do you have a phosphate test kit MBS if so whats your reading please , also how many times do you do a water change in a year you should be doing partial ones on a regular basis.
What about filter maintenance we do ours three times a year late spring, late summer and Autumn , when was the last time you chenged your UVC it all goes to help

hey now, don't get me involved! I haven't been on in... 10 days or so.
what's the point of the phosphate test? If you have algae.... that would be the best indication that phoshates are present.

If you hadnt noticed mate I've hardly been on of late as I've not been well with the condition I have taking over leaving me in agony for days then as weak as a kitten afterwards , Val is that worried she wants me to see the Doctor to be tested for MS .
It was a thread that I found interesting thats all and I thought I'd help straighten things up with MBS

As I said children children please MBS can you answer my questions please ?

Dave
Sorry bout your conditions dave, did not know. :-(

I know we are in different areas and my pond cycle is of 4 to 5 months.
Late March I start feeding wheat and a 60% w/c. I change water not very often. Mostly spring to reduce organic build up from the leaves blowing around. Otherwise it's a top off. Did we change our w/c routine?
I clean my biofilter fequently, 1x a month depending on gph. I clean the mechanical socks 2 to 3 X's per week.
Phosphates with a hannah checker at .23. As posted in a different thread, I am dosing vodka for myself and the fish.

We regularily do waterchanges 40% per week every week spring summer and winter , we use a water dechlorination unit to take out the chlorine on an industrial scale , perhaps netting the pond all year round will reduce your organic waste problems .
We clean the vortex on a weekly basis giving us the 40% water change never had a phosphate problem on the pond but my point is that our regiem works very well for us , it may do for you too.
So perhaps upping your maintenance may be worth a try next year in the spring .
