About to attempt to rebuild our deck pond myself, with helpers. Intimidated!

So, my initial plan to deeply bury most of the hose seemed as though it would give me greater freeze protection. But then I decided that I needed a pressure filter, to make it easier to keep our pond cleaner. I bought the one shown in the photo below (cont'd)

I love the idea that this filter has an ultraviolet light included, as UV lights have proven to be useful tools in keeping our past pond more clear. Plus, this filter can be placed just on the other side of our waste-high retaining wall, just outside of our walk-out basement door. Hopefully this will make maintenance much easier. HOWEVER, now I am worrying about freeze damage to this unit, whose top will be completely out of the ground. We live in southern Ohio (not too far from Dayton, Ohio), so we do occasionally see sub-zero weather...sometimes for a week or more at a time. The 250-acre lake we live on often freezes over completely, sometimes a foot thick or more. Our previous pond survived all that...but what about this expensive new filter? Any advice?

Never used one, sorry. I shut my ponds off during winter. Everything is run by a external pump.

I use a pond heater and have it on a switched outlet so I can turn it off and on when I want to with out going outside .Pressure filters can crack and smell bad ,I had 2 of them on my 1500 gallon pond and they had built in uv's and flushing them everyday 2 times a day it was still a smelly adventure when I opened them up .Smelled like a sewer

I'll repeat myself here so those in the future may come across at least one of the posts. There's a fairly new roofing product it's a 1/8" sheet of fiberglass and asphalt base very tough stuff but definitely not flexible like liner or underlayment but with some care and patience it would be my choice to stop bugs rodents and moles.the corners would be the week link but I doubt many of those who have had issues found the damage in the corners.

The rain just KEEPS pouring down today. I'm hoping and praying that it won't "undo" all the digging and other work we have done already. This is a bit like putting a challenging new roof on a house...you really need to get it done, but if it starts raining heavily before the job is done, it can lead to disaster!

Many of us have been in your shoes - our pondless waterfall reservoir filled with rain water several times before we could get the liner and blocks in. My boys finally got tired of waiting and just bailed it out and worked in the rain. (Easier than bailing a whole pond as it only holds about 150 gallons!)

A portable sump pump might come in handy if you have one to keep it pumped out.

GBBudd-- I've been trying to find this product on Google, but keep finding corrugated stuff, or overseas suppliers. Can you help me find the product you are referring to? I would at least like to check it out and consider it. Thanks.

Cable box wiring mess w arrow LO REZ.jpg
Cable box wiring mess better now 1 Lo Rez.jpg
One BIG reason for wanting to overhaul our old pond was to get rid of ugly "eyesore spots" behind the pond, along our long deck. There were lots of them, including a defunct pondless water feature, remnants of the air conditioning condenser which used to sit by the edge of the pond, and the HIDEOUS ball of confused connections on the back of our home, which had be placed, replaced, and re-replaced again and again by cable and/or satellite TV people. Every time we switched to a new supplier, I asked them to clean up that wiring mess out back, and each time they said they had done so...but did not. Today, I spent a LOT of time re-routing cables, getting rid of obsolete wiring, and re-hanging the box. So now at least this one area looks better than it did...so far!

I plan to relocate the three outlet boxes hanging on the wall now, since they will be located in an awkward place for access after the pond is enlarged. I want to eliminate all three boxes shown here, and move them to the left, just outside of the frame of this photo, so I can access them easily just outside our walk-out basement door.

I sent my helpers home this past Friday, because of heavy rains, with more rain each day in the forecast. Yet today I never saw a drop of rain. So, in spite of my sprained ankle, I worked as much as I could myself, all day long. I tore up some more deck planking, to give me greater access to dig a new hidden trench for the new 1.5" hose going from the pump to the future waterfall. (I will also run the electric power line for the pump in the same trench.) After tearing up the deck boards, I used a post-hole digger to remove dirt from the "trench" (this is easier for a crippled-up old guy to operate than a shovel, in my case. Note one of my crutches set between two joists). I had to dig between the existing joists of the deck, and will sit down and hand dig the dirt from under each joist, to connect each hole, finally making one tunnel about 20 feet long.

The big pit at the bottom of my photo in the above post is where my skimmer/pump housing will be. I plan to create a trap door lid over top of it, which will match the rest of the deck. You can see where the deck used to reach out, to the right, where the old hole is still there from the 4X4 post, which I relocated today.

I added outlets and boy hiding wires can be a job ,but lucky I have steps and could hide the wiring under them and the front porch supports. My son kept saying add more and I did not listen when he did the electric .But putting the switches inside the house has saved me from falls down the steps when the weather is bad .He put all the switch's inside my master bedroom closet .It looks a 1000 percent better then that tangled mess of wires .
