these Maple seeds are the worst around here. Right now they're loaded on neighbors trees and not too long from now they will all be falling and aiming for my pond, or so it'll seem.

I have a maple tree very close to my pond. Right now I have tons of them in my back yard and am netting them out of the pond and they rubbermaid trough.

I have always called these things that fall from the tree helicopters.

We have a silver maple in our backyard that is just now sending out thousands of helicopters. They are considered nuisance trees and they don't even sell them locally anymore but the former owner of our property bought it by mail order and shipped it here. We should have probably cut it down when we built our house because it was only 12-14 high at the time. Now it is over 50 ft high! JW,I know that is so sad about that bicycle rider. How could you predict a tree falling on you? Last year there was a girl from our area that had a tree fall on her at camp. Sometimes you just can't predict these things.

When I am out walking I try to be careful to listen to any cracking sounds and if do I run for the hills. Trees fall around here a lot when the rain makes the ground all mushy and then the wind blows. It is really kinda scary walking when the wind is blowing like crazy around here. Or when we get a big wet heavy snowfall all at once you can hear and see the big tree branches snapping off. One year hubby and I were out walking in a snowfall and the big branches were just falling too much all along the road and said I was getting outta here and heading home cuz it was like a horror movie end of the world feeling :jawdrop:

These are all the seeds or whatever they are that drop from my riverbirch. The trees are still loaded with them! The fish seem to eat them as well.View attachment 70851

I have 4 birch trees in my yard and indeed what a freakin mess this year. All the lil seeds and little squiggly worm stringy things. Its so bad that they actually clogged my pool filter which is huge and on the opposite side of the yard! They get wet and bunch together like oatmeal. Very bad this yr I can't wait for it to stop snowing seeds.

Luckily our prevailing wind sends most of the maple seeds away from the pond, sure do get a ton of seedlings to deal with.

I'm going to have to go with Honey Locust. The only reason to put a skimmer on a little 300g pond....

Our neighbour planted Black Locusts in his yard when he built his house. Not a day goes by that I don't curse those trees! The seed pods, like flattened pea pods, are litterally EVERYWHERE! They sprout in the gardens, the lawn, the eavestroughs (gutters?) and even between the boards on the decks! And of course they land in the pond by the bucketful! Sorry, gotta go take more blood-pressure medication!!

That's interesting, John. I've read that Black Locust are poisonous to humans and creatures alike. I'm glad to hear your fish aren't affected, if it's indeed true.

Honey bees love them! It is our main nectar flow for bees here.
