One thing I found rough with the showcase was only having one area to upload photos to and then have to drag them to another area.

Yep, it's not an ideal system at the moment, but I'm not sure it's possible to add more than one attachment area to the showcase entry page. I'm hoping that an update of the plug-in we use will allow it .

@Ian , which plugin (and platform) is the forum running on? I'm curious because I build websites for our authors, and for some of them, a forum of some kind would be a really good addition.

Its Xenforo, I'd really recommend it - feel free to drop me a PM if you've got some questions about it .
