Good luck with these non lethal plans. The World famous San Diego Wild Animal Park is 3 miles from me and they tell me that these birds are not welcome there. They also say that nothing stops them from coming back. These birds mingle with and take food away from their Pink Flamingo population and nest in the trees just a 100 yards away.

Those scarecrow sprinklers? They'll blast water at movement, and though i've never seen a heron at my pond, i had it out for a while...the neighbourhood kids sure liked it. I think it would work great.
MY fear??? Moose. Imagine what one of those big buggers would do to a pond liner. Who says lining with rock and gravel is decorative?

there was a news story i saw within the last 6 months that showed a moose that had fallen into a family swimming pool. And they managed to get the bugger out!

If you don't have other pets that might get snared could you string wires a foot or so above the water so the heron hits the wire before he gets to the water?

I have a great pyr who chases* pigeons/crows what is left is not pretty when he catches them so I don't think I will have a problem with herons. But I couldn't use the wires out of danger to the dog.

*However, my macaw parrots chase him so it balances out I guess.

I've read that a great blue will only walk into the water from the edge or shore, so fishing line just around the perimeter should do the trick. The fishing line has not seemed to slow dogs determined to go for a swim, aside from bug them a little!

a few times of getting shot in the a$$ with a bb gun they will not return.. it wont kill them but they will associate your yard with pain not a meal.. i did this with complete success.. the GBH still hunts the area i see him daily in the creek 100 yards or so away from my house..he flys around my house, rarely over the property. but hasnt left the area. and a decoy heron keeps the wrens.and cranes away.

Hi, A heron found our pond last year and ate almost all of our fish before we realized what was happening. We now have multi rainbow colored fishing line stretched over the pond and it is working well.

Yeah, I'm planning on some fishing line. My pond is basically above ground (it's squre, with 2 feet above ground and then dug 4 feet into the ground), so the dogs aren't an issue.

you cant kill 'em ...theres nothing saying you cant inflict pain... a bb in the a$$ will get 'em to leave !!

That's animal abuse. So that is a crime. Please don't do that. It could get infected and be a slow death for the poor bird. If you love fish, you probably love all animals.

It's the beak that's the problem. It's so darn long. It's a handy tool for fishing. It beats a rod and reel. lol.

Actually no, you could shoot me from 10 feet away on bare skin and a BB from your typical Wal-Mart Daisy BB gun would bounce off. It hurts, but that's it. I think that's what he was talking about.
