No clue @YShahar , I only caught 3 last year, all medium size. Baby came from somewhere.

I worry I may have anywhere from 1 to 40, live birth babies.
I have not seen them since I tore the pond apart, maybe scared them, but they will return.

I caught a lot of big mama's in 2022.

Can't afford to lose 200 some fish, have maybe 50 left.

Fingers crossed that you are hitting them early enough that you do not have a repeat loss.

I am still careful taking the top to my skimmer off since my watersnake used to always sleep in there but so far (knock on wood) she or he has not come back after finally taking my biggest (and possibly slowest) shubie. I hope that the two that you have found this year are a sign that you have drastically cut down on the population to the point of almost irradicating them. Pulling the hornwort, ect. I'm sure will help. Hopefully the snakes in your area have spread the word that addy1's ponds are in a high risk zone!

The small little suckers, went in the trap ate the fry and left the trap. Made the opening smaller.

We saw a snake today in our yard while working around our new fountain garden. It slithered slowly out from our shaded arbor, I not sure what kind it was but it was fairly thick bodied and about 3 feet.

The female very thick bodied, 3 feet ish, looks like a copperhead when wet, sort of pale when dry
I have pictures of the female and male at the beginning of the thread.

Walked out to walk the pups, SURPRISE. A large snake trapped in our fencing for the pups play area.

Was going cut it loose and relocate, thinking large water snake, but it was one of our black snakes. Cut loose and let it keep protecting our property. It backed out of the cut fence, calm.

I grabbed the head, neighbor and hubby cut the deer fence which had trapped it.

Last picture is about 1/2 of it. Around 6 feet.

That's a pretty good sized black snake. I wonder if it would have molested the puppers??

After looking at these pictures I'm pretty sure it was a black snake we saw in our yard yesterday. We didn't disturb it so it can continue to do mouse patrol.

Glad you were able to safely cut it free! That mesh fencing is so dangerous for snakes. We started buying deer fencing with larger openings in it after we had a couple fatalities with snakes that we didn't find in time to help.

It is just around the yorkie play area, had the green plastic fence lil suckers chewed through it. Wide open area, will look at bigger weave. Maybe it eat the small water snakes!

No , might have tried to bite then, but they are never out there without us. We walk the area for mushrooms etc before we bring them out. We = me and two neighbors, we call it yorkie ball time. Play time

@addy, if we were closer I would have given you our black metal fencing from Lowes. We used it for years around our gardens to keep our Newfoundlands out and around the pond.

People across the street excavated a large clay bottomed pond and they saw we were getting rid of it and were thrilled to have it.

Sadly we no longer have Newfoundlands or a pond, but life is still good
