We had a heron come by 2 weeks ago (2 hours before we HAD to leave for an out of state wedding) and eat 2 koi and 4 goldfish out of our two ponds.

(Too bad they didn't eat the 5 CATFISH that we have taking up room in there! What the hell do you do with those things? Why the previous owners of the house decided to mix in catfish in these two 300 gallon ponds is beyond me!)

Hello all. I just became a Heron victim myself last week AND he picked off one of my three catfish but left him laying outside of the pond. I lost about 10 nice sized goldfish. I love birds but this guy has a Taurus Judge .410 waiting for him next time.
Just out of curiosity, my pond goes down to 36 inches deep...is that deep enough for escape?

Well you can put a little fish house in the bottom, just made from a large enough flat rock, and two bricks. If your fish are small enough to fit under there. If they are large, you can get an even larger flat rock, and use cinder blocks instead.

However, I am not entirely sure that goldfish/koi will recognize the threat and run and hide. I am not sure they can tell the difference between a big bird, and a person. Even if they can tell the difference between the big bird and you yourself, they may still see it as someone that might throw some food in the water.

And then come right up to him.

So the best thing you can do is build one of those PVC based nets, or build a nice enclosure over the top of the pond. Seems to me like if the birds couldn't see it from the air, they wouldn't come to it.
