Hi: I live in upstate NY where the temps in winter sometimes get to 20 & 25 below zero. For the past several years I have always shut the system down around the 1st of Nov where the water temp is around 38 or 40 deg. I put in a floating pond heater which keeps the opening in ice about 3' around. There is about 2500 gals of water (3 & 1/2' deep) and I have about 50 or 60 fish. I haven't added any kind of air pump system to the floating heater and so far have not lost a fish come spring. Hopefully this kind of wintering for the pond will continue to work.
