I've been trying to thin out flag irises in my gravel bog. Haven't had much luck or I'm just weak. The leaves just break off when I pull on them. Also need to be careful not to puncture the liner or crack the PVC pipes underneath.

I carefully use a small garden shovel. Irises can be a real pain in the butt, for sure the most difficult plant to work with in my bog. I usually try to sever the roots/rhizomes little by little.

I used a short saw jaw blade, yellow flag iris, cut the tubers, yanked out in the bog. In the pond serated kitchen knife, cut up only, saw cut pull apart.
