Woo Hoo... my pond is clearing up. Finally. I was beginning to get discouraged. I did a very small water change two days ago and noticed last night some clearing. Today I could actually see to the bottom of the pond. First time in awhile.

that's great.... I'll know to try a partial water change if I ever get in trouble ( haha ) again. For me it settle and I see the bottom again also... but the water is brown.. definitely the mulch...

Good luck to you and enjoy the fish ! :)

Cool John55 it's always nice to be able to see things down in your pond since we do go thru a lot of work in building them just the way we want. No fun not to be able to see anything! Enjoy!

Boo Hoo. My water has gone downhill and is now bilish green. I am resisting getting a new pump to work the UV light.

Here are the things i have tried:

1. Have a bog into which I placed some water lilies, iris and one lotus. Added some microbe lift as well. Lots of mesh and lava rocks.

2. Did not buy water hyacinths this year. They did not do too much last year and die out at season end.

I may have to give in and get a pump to feed the UV light and just turn that on every few days.

I do not do any water changes. Does this help? Would new water bring in fresh minerals and encourage algae?

My greenish water is not due to suspended solids but is some kind of algae.

For a while things worked. I suppose feeding the fish, even every two days, plus the warmer weather set back the progress.

If you could get some grasses, like rush, water mint, things with a lot of root mass you bog might do better. Add parrots feather, creeping primrose, pennywort things of that sort.

I will try to do that.

Any opinions about various natural algae control bacterial products?

Should I use some form of matting/styrofoam to shade part of the bog and pond?

My bog is mostly sun, it gets some shade from the maple tree. The pond the only shade are the lilies that just started to grow like crazy. The pond is full sun, sun rise to sun set.

You could try shading some. That is what the lilies do to 1/2 of my pond.

You could move to the Pacific N.W..............we have no sun here, free shade and only rain and clouds

j.w. With weather like that you need an indoor pond....

I am sure my pond will clear up between when it gets cold enough in October and when it freezes in January.

I will just see the fish at those times....
