One of the Great Egrets that frequents my yard was trying to swallow something a couple days ago. When I got out the binoculars I was able to see that it was a woodpecker that it was dunking in my pond. It was apparently dead by the time I saw it..I was very sad all day but thought it probably came accross it maybe after it fell in the pond...Then, to my horror, it has taken up sitting atop my bird feeder and waiting for another bird to catch...No bird has ever caught any of my fish but now I have to worry about an unsuspecting songbird coming to the feeder. When I looked up what they eat, small birds are on the menu!

Oh how awful :(. It's so sad when we create an environment to attract wild life and it inadvertently contributes to their demise :(

To sit by the bird feeder to get them just blows my mind. I have a bird feeder that I put specific food in to NOT attract starlings or house sparrows. I now get all sorts of wonderful birds and would hate to see a egret grabbing them!!

Maybe move your feeders to some safer spot where your smaller birds have a place to escape to easier and the Egret cannot just sit above and wait.

Hawks in our area will hunt by perching above bird feeders. We make sure there is plenty of cover near our bird feeder.

After my night time visitor who ripped the pond apart along the edges.

That night 30 mouse traps were set.

The next morning two traps were. Set off but no one in the trap.

No sign of the varment. Since they sprung the trap. Time will tell
