what triggers Molly to change color?

My water turn green, white Molly that I bought turned spotted grey.
It's a male, sail fin type

Fish often change colour as they mature.

one of the factors is background , i observed guppy , molly will turn dark and richer in colour if background or floor is dark . i had molly plate guppy long time ago in one pond they would turn very colour ful , some mollies would develope blue green red spots
other factor can be temperature and food eg algae

May be you are right, In my glass aquarium (container C) Black molly showed yellow/ Golden color, but the molly I purchased along with it kept in container A became more black color, and grew bigger than molly in container C
