Hi All

My first venture into building a major pond, so a big learning curve, my apologies for any silly questions.

My pond has reasonable length off runs of pipes, 10m the majority will be underground under a patio. So what type of pipe should I use and should I try to protect them by using pea gravel or some other method?

I would be grateful if you can provide links to examples of the pipes as there seem so many variations e.g. just search on flexible PVC and you get may different types.

Thanks

Are you talking about a bog? If not, what is all the pipe for?
Yes it's a bog filter.

I'm looking at a design with a skimmer and a bottom drain that feeds into a bog filter. I've got carried away in SketchUp so here's a pic of the under side. The bottom drain goes via a settlement tank into the bog. It's a long thin bog so it feeds in from both sides

Permanently unserviceable pipe should be rigid schedule 40 pvc in my opinion. If you want flex pvc, transition between rigid and flex outside the patio where you can get at the coupling if necessary

I need to translate "rigid schedule 40 pvc" to find the equivalent in the UK , as far as I know we don't use schedule 40 or 80 in the UK

I think you have schedule 40 over there but maybe not as prevalent as another equivalent standard. Basically, Use a hard pipe—designed for buildings (no "pond tubing") in the longest length possible to reduce joints anywhere you would have to do major demolition to access it again.

In the US, plumbing code generally requires that buried pvc pipe be surrounded for 6" by clean backfill (no rocks bigger than 1/2"). Generally a good rule to follow for pond building as well.
